Care at The Dower House. In our fourth "interview with", we invite you to meet Julie, Health Care Assistant (Nights) at The Dower House.

At The Dower House, carers are at the heart of everything we do. Through each conversation, each act of kindness, and each moment of reassurance, they shape the daily lives of residents. For Julie, a Health Care Assistant who works primarily on nights, that responsibility is something she has carried with dedication for over two decades.

Julie’s journey into care began after arriving in England, at a time when she was searching for direction. She stepped into the role because it was an opportunity available to her and over time, that opportunity became a vocation.

“You make a real difference every day,” Julie reflects. “Even small acts of kindness mean so much.”

Over 22 years, Julie has experienced both the rewards and the realities of care work. From supporting residents through illness and
vulnerability, to working through the intense challenges of the Covid pandemic, her role has required strength, resilience, and unwavering commitment. Reflecting on that time, she describes it as one of the hardest periods she has ever faced - but also one of the proudest. Together as a team, they continued to show up each day, supporting residents and each other through uncertainty and exhaustion.

Julie also speaks honestly about the emotional challenges that can come with the role, including moments that require quiet strength and professionalism in the face of adversity. Through it all, her commitment to caring for others has never faltered.

For Julie, great care is found in the smallest details - taking time to listen, offering reassurance, and making each person feel seen and valued. Whether it’s remembering a favourite drink, sharing a moment of conversation, or simply being present, these actions build trust, preserve dignity, and create a sense of safety.

Working nights brings its own unique rhythm. It is often a quieter time, but no less important - ensuring residents feel safe, comfortable, and supported through the night requires attentiveness, compassion, and strong clinical judgement.

Julie describes The Dower House as somewhere that “never feels like an institution - it truly feels like a home.” For her, this comes
down to a shared commitment: residents are treated as individuals, never tasks, and the team works together to create a warm, respectful environment where people feel they belong.

The role has also shaped Julie’s outlook on life. “Life is fragile,” she reflects. “Kindness matters, even when it’s not returned. Caring
is never wrong.”

Outside of work, Julie finds balance through gardening and exercise - nurturing growth, both in the world around her and within herself. When asked what advice she would give to someone considering a career in care, Julie shares thoughtful, practical wisdom: be patient, be respectful, and take the time to understand each individual. “Treat them like your family,” she says.

Julie’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of the caring profession. It is not simply a job - it is a role that requires skill, compassion, and resilience. At The Dower House, we are incredibly proud of Julie and the dedication she shows every day. It is people like Julie who define what great care truly looks like.
