At The Dower House, we believe that some of life’s greatest pleasures come from reconnecting with the hobbies and passions that have brought us joy over the years. For resident Ian, that passion has always been golf.
Recently, Ian enjoyed a very special visit to Royal Winchester Golf Club, where he was warmly welcomed by Men’s Captain John Quinn and Ladies’ Captain Sheena Quinn for an afternoon filled with memories, friendship and plenty of golfing conversation.
As a former member of the club, stepping back onto familiar ground brought back countless happy memories. Ian, who once played off a handicap of 12 and enjoyed regular rounds with his friends, was delighted to tour the course by buggy with John, discussing what had changed since his playing days. Looking out across the fairways, Ian quickly noticed a few differences.
“There are perhaps fewer bunkers and a little less rough now,” he noted. “It’s a tricky course that commands great respect!”
The visit sparked a flood of wonderful memories from Ian’s golfing years. While he proudly recalled achieving a hole-in-one, he remained characteristically modest about the achievement.
“It was a complete fluke!” he joked. “Driving wasn’t usually my strong point. I preferred putting, using the 9 iron and pitching wedge and, of course, the electric trolley!”
The afternoon also included a putting session on the practice green and an opportunity to catch up on all the latest news from the club. Ian thoroughly enjoyed revisiting a place that had played such an important role in his life.
“It was fantastic to be back. So many happy memories came flooding back as we went around the course. Everyone made me feel incredibly welcome and it was wonderful to talk golf again with people who share the same passion.”
For Activities Co-ordinator Christine Farmery, the visit was a perfect example of how meaningful experiences can make a real difference.
“We knew how much Ian loved golf, but when he returned from the trip he shared so many wonderful stories and memories with us. Experiences like this are exactly what person-centred activities are all about. By understanding what matters to each resident, we can create opportunities that reconnect them with the people, places and passions that have shaped their lives.”
A huge thank you to John, Sheena and everyone at Royal Winchester Golf Club for making Ian’s return so memorable. Seeing the joy on his face throughout the afternoon was a reminder of how important it is to continue nurturing lifelong interests and creating opportunities for residents to revisit treasured memories.
Sometimes, a trip down memory lane starts with a golf buggy and a putting green.
Join us for a tour of the house to experience the welcoming, homely atmosphere. Book a visit now, we’d be delighted to welcome you.
