The gardens were a passion of our founder, Mrs Judith Lywood, who always viewed them as a natural extension of the home. Today, that same approach continues under the care of our Head Gardener, Ben Weatherall, who has been part of The Dower House team for more than a decade.
Ben knows every tree, border and pathway throughout the grounds and is always happy to stop for a chat, share seasonal highlights or show visitors around. He also runs a regular gardening club, giving residents the opportunity to get involved, spend time outdoors and continue enjoying a lifelong interest in gardening.
One of the things that makes our grounds so special is the sense of discovery they provide. Winding pathways, bridges, mature planting and peaceful corners reveal something different with every visit.
Throughout the year, residents can enjoy a wonderful variety of trees, flowers and wildlife. Spring brings snowdrops, winter aconites, daffodils, crocuses, bluebells and fritillaries, while summer fills the gardens with colour and fragrance.
Among the many highlights are:
The large pond and surrounding bog garden remain favourite places to sit, relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature.
Spending time outdoors can have a positive impact on wellbeing, and we actively encourage residents to enjoy the gardens whenever possible.
Our wide riven stone pathways provide easy access throughout the main grounds, and there are plenty of seating areas where residents can rest and take in the views. Residents who use wheelchairs can also enjoy the gardens with support from our team.
The gardens provide the backdrop for many activities throughout the year, from gardening sessions and outdoor gatherings to summer parties and games with family and friends.
As you explore The Dower House and its grounds, you will discover a number of sculptures created by Belinda Rush Jansen.
