Activities & Entertainment

Activities & Entertainment (Care Home, Winchester)

As a resident you are invited to suggest the activities and entertainment you would like to see on the timetable. Popular choices are interesting speakers, current films and a range of music activities. Of course, you are not obliged to partake if you do not wish.

Enjoying the gardens

If you enjoy spending time in the garden you may do some gardening, or simply appreciate the beautiful and extensive gardens. Regular trips to gardens of interest, National Trust properties and garden centres are a regular feature of life at The Dower House.

Musical Interludes

Musical entertainment is always a popular choice at The Dower House.

There is a grand piano which you, or your family, are welcome to play at any time. It has been known for resident’s grandchildren to play and sing for us which is always enjoyed!

Throughout the year we welcome performances from violinists, pianists, local school choirs, saxophonists, groups from Winchester College and various singers.

Film Screenings

For your comfort and convenience, you can make use of the large screen and induction loop system in the Drawing Room. This also provides the perfect setting for weekly film screenings. Requests for favourite films or anything you would like to watch are welcomed.

Day Trips

Throughout the year we offer residents the chance to go on a variety of day trips.

These include visiting local museums and garden centres, Romsey Abbey, Sir Harold Hillier Gardens, Micheldever Bluebell Woods and boat trips on Southampton water. Wherever possible, transport for these trips is provided by accessible minibus, which enables residents of all abilities to enjoy such outings.

We also offer the opportunity for Christmas shopping trips, afternoon tea out and more.

During our trips, the appropriate number of suitably qualified staff are always on hand.

Other activities and entertainment

Each week we run a knit and natter group and a chair-based exercise class. We regularly welcome knowledgeable speakers who provide fascinating talks on a variety of subjects, artist run art classes, pottery classes run by a local company, cheese and wine tasting, flower pressing classes, quizzes and games and evening celebrations for occasions such as Burns night.

Each year we hold an annual Christmas Fayre to raise funds for local charities.

To keep everyone informed of the upcoming activities there is a monthly newsletter which includes updates from Mrs Lywood, owner of The Dower House, garden news, recent events, outings and activities and other interesting news from around the home.

Our Events Co-ordinator welcomes suggestions and requests for places to visit, subjects of talks and any other activities.
