“When someone comes into care, they’re not just leaving everything they’ve done – they’re leaving a home they may have lived in for 50 or 60 years. It’s so important that we recreate that sense of home here, while always protecting dignity.”
Celia Bailey, General Manager, The Dower House
Before any move, it’s important to understand what level of care is needed. A care needs assessment looks at physical, emotional and medical requirements and helps ensure the right support is in place from day one.
This assessment can be arranged through a GP, hospital team, social services or directly with the care home. At The Dower House, a comprehensive assessment with our Matron allows us to understand not just care needs, but personal routines, preferences and what matters most to each individual.
Once care needs are clear, families can explore which type of care is most suitable - whether residential, nursing, respite or palliative care.
Visiting homes, meeting the team and getting a feel for the environment are an important part of this decision. Many families find it helpful to visit more than once. At The Dower House, you’re welcome to come for an informal tour and chat, either on your own or with family or friends. Some people choose a second visit to join us for lunch or an activity, helping them feel even more confident in their choice.
Care fees vary depending on the type of care and length of stay, so having clear, open conversations early on can help reduce stress later.
Following the care assessment, The Dower House team will talk through suitable rooms (subject to availability), the level of care required and the total weekly cost. We also discuss funding options, affordability and any potential support available, so families feel informed and reassured.
Preparing for the move itself is about both practical arrangements and emotional reassurance. This may include:
Once everything is agreed, we work with families to plan a move-in date that feels right and allows time to prepare.
Moving day is just the beginning. A good care home knows that settling in takes time, patience and kindness.
From the first day, our team focuses on helping new residents feel comfortable, safe and at home. We take time to build trust, learn routines and offer reassurance throughout those early days and weeks.
Sometimes, a move into care happens at short notice, often following illness or hospital discharge. In these situations, a quick but supportive response is essential.
At The Dower House, we act swiftly to provide clear next steps. Where possible, visits and assessments can happen together, or our Matron can carry out an assessment at home or in hospital. We confirm care needs, room availability, costs and timings as clearly and quickly as possible, ensuring families feel supported rather than rushed.
At The Dower House, we recognise that moving into care is not just a practical step, but an emotional one. Whether planned or urgent, we take time to support both residents and families throughout the entire journey - with warmth, transparency and genuine care.
