At The Dower House, we believe that life doesn’t stop when someone moves in - it simply takes on new and meaningful chapters. For one of our residents, Miss Patricia Elliott, that chapter recently included a return to something she has always loved… fast cars.
Patricia found herself re-living a passion - on a racetrack at Thruxton - experiencing the thrill of travelling at over 130mph in an Aston Martin.
“I don’t think we even had 130mph on the speedometer in my day!” Patricia laughed. “I’ve been around for quite a long time now, but this is one of those memories that will really stick with me - it’s not something I’ll ever forget.”
Patricia has always had a passion for cars. During her time working at British Aerospace nearly 70 years ago - where she was one of only two women - she developed a love of engines, speed, and the open road. That passion has never left her.
When the team at The Dower House asked whether she would like to revisit that part of her life, her answer was immediate. “She didn’t hesitate for a second,” said Sara, our Resident Wellbeing Co-ordinator. “We knew how much she loved sports cars, and it was wonderful to be able to bring that part of her story back to life.”
The day was made even more special by the presence of Patricia’s cousin, Susan, who travelled from Scotland to be there. “When we heard Patricia was getting back into a racing car at 98, we were amazed,” she said. “But really… it’s very Patricia. She has always had that spirit.”
Patricia fondly recalls her younger days behind the wheel, including the Wolseley Hornet sports car her father gifted her for her 21st birthday. She would drive colleagues to and from work along winding country roads, often using clever tricks to save fuel.
“We used to build up speed going uphill, switch off the engine, and then coast down the other side,” she said with a smile. “We had to
try save petrol!”
For us at The Dower House, moments like this are what truly matter - helping residents reconnect with their passions, create new memories, and continue to live life in a way that feels meaningful to them. It was a privilege to be part of such a special experience, and a joy to see Patricia doing something she loves. Because here, it’s not just about care - it’s about living well, every single day.
