At The Dower House, every member of the team brings something unique - and for Alfred, care is about connection, learning, and making a meaningful impact.
Alfred’s journey into care began through family, after being introduced to the role by a sibling working as a nurse. What followed was a career shaped by curiosity, compassion, and a genuine interest in people. “What I enjoy most is working with people and learning from them,” Alfred explains. “You meet people from all different backgrounds and cultures.”
This openness to others is an important part of the care sector community, where learning from different life experiences, from both residents and colleagues alike, helps to shape more meaningful, person-centred care.
Care, however, is not without its challenges. Alfred speaks honestly about the realities of the role - supporting people through difficult behaviours and, at times, loss. Yet it is precisely these moments that highlight the importance of the work. “Knowing my work has an impact on other people’s lives” is what makes Alfred most proud.
For Alfred, good care is grounded in presence and attentiveness. Small gestures - offering reassurance, spending time, or even something as simple as noticing a resident’s needs - can make a real difference.
Those everyday moments, combined with a strong sense of professionalism and warmth, shape how residents experience life in the home. Known for being approachable, detailed, and helpful - particularly with technology - Alfred also brings humour and storytelling into daily interactions, adding energy and personality to the environment. Alfred also values the opportunity to grow within the role, including being part of the wider team and contributing to how care is delivered.
Outside of work, life centres around family, travel, and reading - reflecting a natural curiosity and appreciation for different perspectives. When asked what advice Alfred would give to someone considering care as a career, the answer is clear: “Be open-minded. Be present. Be a good listener. Make a difference to others’ lives.”
Alfred’s story is a reminder that great care is built on understanding, respect, and human connection - and that even the smallest moments can have a lasting impact.
