At The Dower House, the role of a carer is at the very heart of everything we do. It is carers who build relationships, provide comfort, and make a genuine difference to residents’ lives every single day. For Toni, one of our Senior Health Care Assistants, that responsibility is something deeply personal.
Toni’s journey into care began with her own family. After helping to look after her grandad and later her nana, she found herself naturally drawn to the profession. “I started working when I was 18,” Toni explains, “and then I was caring for my nan as well.” That early experience shaped not only her career, but her understanding of what care truly means.
Now working as a Senior Health Care Assistant at The Dower House, Toni speaks simply but powerfully about what she values most in her role: “Making residents happy and being there for them.” It is this consistency, presence, and compassion that define great care - and Toni embodies all of these qualities in her day-to-day work.
The realities of care are not always easy. Supporting residents with complex needs and other challenges, can often require resilience, patience, and strength. Toni is open about this, reflecting on some of the difficult experiences she has encountered over the years. However, it is also where the greatest sense of purpose is found. “My proudest moments are when you genuinely make a difference - whether that’s big or small.”
For Toni, it is often the simplest actions that matter most. Taking the time to sit and talk, to listen properly, or to help someone feel
understood can transform a resident’s day. “Chatting, listening, and being there” are, in her words, the things that make the biggest difference.
She also speaks warmly about being part of the team at The Dower House. “We’re like a family - we look out for each other,” she says,
highlighting the supportive culture that underpins the home. Alongside this, the environment itself plays a role in daily life, with the gardens providing a
calm and enjoyable space for residents and staff alike.
The role has shaped Toni’s outlook beyond work too. “It’s taught me to be kind,” she reflects. “People have bad days, and it’s important to look out for them.” It is a mindset that carries through everything she does.
Residents know Toni as someone who brings both energy and warmth. “Some say I’m loud,” she laughs, “but others say I’m lovely and caring
- and I love to chat and ask how they are.” It is this genuine connection that sits at the centre of her work.
Outside of The Dower House, Toni enjoys staying active - whether that’s going to the gym, swimming, or playing pool with her son. Above all, she
is most proud of her three children, which reflects the strong family values that are so evident in her approach to caring for others.
When asked what advice she would give to someone considering a role in care, Toni is clear: “You need to have a caring heart. It’s not just a job.”
Toni’s story is a reminder of just how vital carers are within a care home. They are the people who make each day meaningful for
residents, who offer reassurance and companionship, and who turn care into something truly personal.
At The Dower House, we are proud of the role our carers play - and proud of people like Toni who bring that role to life every day.
