What is respite care and when is it needed?

Author: Chris Golding

Respite care is a form of short-term care designed to provide support at moments when life feels disrupted or uncertain. It offers temporary relief for individuals who need extra help, while also giving family carers valuable time to rest, go on holiday, recover or manage other commitments. For many families, respite care provides reassurance during periods of change - whether planned or unexpected.

What is respite care?

Respite care is temporary care provided in a residential or nursing home setting. Stays can last from a few days to several weeks, depending on individual needs and typically include personal care, meals, activities and access to professional support. Unlike long-term care, respite care is designed to be flexible, offering short-term reassurance without a permanent commitment.

It is often arranged during recovery from illness or surgery, following hospital discharge, or when regular care arrangements are temporarily unavailable. However, respite care is not only for emergencies - many stays are planned in advance to prevent carer burnout and support overall wellbeing.

At The Dower House for example, we have a number of respite residents who stay with us whilst their family are going on holiday and they would like peace of mind that their loved one is safe.

Who is respite care for?

Respite care can be beneficial for a wide range of people and circumstances, including:

  • Individuals recovering after an operation, illness or period of reduced mobility – just like Mrs Morris [screenshot of video] who has recently stayed at the Dower House whilst recovering from surgery. This short video tells you more
  • People who would benefit from professional support and regular meals for a short time
  • Families whose usual carer is unwell, away or in need of rest
  • Those exploring care options before making longer-term decisions
  • Individuals seeking a safe, supported change of pace close to home

For many, respite care offers a calm interlude - a chance to rest, regain confidence and feel supported, without pressure or obligation.

Respite care at The Dower House

At The Dower House Residential & Nursing Home in Winchester, respite care is delivered with the same care, attention and dignity afforded to permanent residents. Established in 1989 and set within five and a half acres of landscaped gardens in Headbourne Worthy, just outside Winchester, The Dower House reflects a long-held ethos of warmth, respect and thoughtful care.

Short-stay guests benefit from experienced nursing support, high staff-to-resident ratios and a relaxed country-house atmosphere. Importantly, The Dower House is one of the few homes to offer respite care with no minimum length of stay*, allowing families to arrange support for exactly as long as it is needed.

This flexibility is particularly valued following hospital discharge or during periods when care needs are evolving. Stays can often be arranged at short notice, and extended where appropriate, subject to care needs and availability.

“Faultless team without exception. Thank you for my most recuperative visit imaginable – your team made such a difference”.

Mrs H

“I cannot fault my stay with you in any way. You were so kind and caring and have contributed to my recovery”.

What does a short stay include?

People staying for respite care at The Dower House enjoy fully furnished, comfortable rooms designed to make settling in as easy and stress-free as possible. Guests have access to freshly prepared meals, attentive support day and night, and all the facilities available to long-term residents, including activities, outings and the home’s gardens.

Registered nurses are on site 24 hours a day, and assistance is always available, providing reassurance for both guests and their families.

Can respite care lead to a longer-term stay?

For some people, respite care becomes an opportunity to experience life in a care home setting without commitment. Many guests find their stay so restorative that they choose to return again or decide that a permanent move feels right. For others, respite care simply provides exactly what was needed at a particular moment in time.

A supported pause, when it matters most

Whether arranged in advance or at short notice, respite care can offer clarity, comfort and peace of mind. At The Dower House, short stays are shaped around individual needs, offering flexible support within a calm, welcoming environment - helping residents and families feel supported during times of change.
